In 2016, SGDD-ASAM launched Child and Family Support Centers in order to create a more secure environment for refugee children and their families and to conduct activities aimed at improving the mental, emotional and psychomotor development of children where Child and Youth Friendly Spaces are also offered.
These centers operate with child protection officers, social workers, psychologists, family counselors, health educators, nutritionists, youth counselors, outreach teams, interpreters, volunteers, support teams and administrative staff and offer social and legal counselling, primary healthcare and nutritional counselling services. The children are encouraged to attend schools by offering activities that would improve their life skills and provide psychosocial support or various courses are organized to support children currently attending schools with language courses and extra study sessions.
E-voucher cards and hygiene packs are also delivered to vulnerable refugees in these Child and Family Support Centers as in the other SGDD-ASAM Offices.
Within the scope of the program, a Training Center was opened in Gaziantep as of February 2017 and regular Turkish language courses are started to be offered, information sessions and field activities are organized to increase schooling rates, psychosocial activities for the children and extra study hours are organized for the children attending school to help them in following the lectures in a better way. When children with special needs are identified, they are referred to Gaziantep Al Farah Child and Family Support Center and necessary counselling and protection services are received.
